Jonathan Edward Mayhew
Born: Aquarius metal monkey: the compassionate combative. Raised: Non Denominational Christian (evangelical) in Sackville N.S. At the age of 8 he was replanted to the Toronto suburb of Ajax then the slightly more cooler North York where he attended the Claude Watson School for the Arts. As with many interesting and outcast teenagers in the late 90s he became fascinated with the rave scene. Many drugs were consumed. Upon the realization of his self destruction he quit drugs and returned to the church. He was baptized again. He had one last fight with himself and his sexuality before being inspired to allow himself to blossom. He returned to his love of art and studied painting and fashion at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He learned what he needed and returned to Toronto before his debt inflated beyond reason. He became involved with The Whitehouse Studio Project, and has flourished in the Artist Cooperative.

I work within the context of investigating the human condition from a homosexual perspective. The work is not about an individual, rather, how experience forms one. Thoughts, perspectives and positions, constructed in marks, colours and gestures, are an automated response. The work translates into a saturation of genuine actions. The body is a point of expression; a reflection of the past, existing in the present, manipulated to attract or deter. This leaves the figure as a form to be exploited.
